This shikishi was drawn by Shinji Katakura at Anime Expo 2010. He was the character designer for the bishojo games/anime Edelweiss, Kira Kira and Green Green. He was also the art and concept designer for Melody of Oblivion.
When my daughter and I were passing the Mangagamer booth we noticed a few artists hard at work. We went over to observe their drawing styles using pencil, Copic Multiliners and Copic markers. Katakura-san was particularly nice, telling her to pay close attention so she will learn! After he finished the shikishi he was working on (the artists were selling and tracking each shikishi - you could pick one of several characters for a price), he asked via an interpreter what my daughter’s name was, and that he would like to draw a shikishi as a gift for her.
She was hesitant at first, eventually picking out a character that resembled her (long hair, dark eyes) named Natsume Amamiya from Edelweiss, but then turned to me and said softly, “The characters don’t look very happy. None of them are smiling.” Katakura-san made sure Natsume Amamiya had a nice smile, much to her delight.
I confess I am not a gamer and didn’t know at the time Edelweiss was a bishojo/eroge game for boys/men 18+ (though I did suspect it!). So for now the gift from Katakura-san will remain just a drawing of a sweet, young, proper school girl (before she started participating in extracurricular activities!).
